Swing State Voters Trust Trump On Key Issues

October 24, 2024

A new Washington Post/Schar School poll finds more likely voters trust Donald Trump on issues like the economy, immigration, and crime, while Kamala Harris is trusted more on health care, abortion, and climate change.

By The Numbers:

  • Inflation is the top issue on voters’ minds (66%), followed by the economy (65%), threats to U.S. democracy (61%), health care (55%), crime (49%), immigration (45%), and abortion (44%).

  • Forty-nine percent of voters believe Trump would do a better job handling inflation and 51% a better job handling the economy. Only 33% and 36%, respectively, say the same about Harris. Forty-five percent say Trump would do a better job handling crime and 52% say he’d do a better job handling immigration. Only 35% and 33% say the same about Harris.

  • Forty-six percent of voters believe that Harris would do a better job handling health care, 46% handling climate change, and 51% handling abortion. Only 36%, 26%, and 29% say the same about Trump, respectively.

The Bottom Line: Over 20 million people have voted already, with some of the biggest days of early vote yet to come in swing states like Georgia, Nevada, and Wisconsin. Trump’s momentum is likely in large part because of the issues of the economy, inflation and the border. Harris has not made the case she’ll do anything differently, while voters are thinkinh their lives were better four years ago.
