Trump Honeymoon Begins

December 12, 2024

President Donald Trump is enjoying some early honeymoon numbers 39 days before he is sworn in for his second term, according to a new CNN poll. A majority (55%) of Americans approve of Trump’s handling the transition so far and a majority (54%) believe he’ll do a good job when he returns to the White House next month. Additionally, most Americans have a lot or some confidence in how Trump will handle key issues facing the country.

By The Numbers:

  • Thirty-nine percent of Americans have “a lot of confidence” in Trump when dealing with the economy; 27% have “some confidence” in Trump when dealing with the economy; and 35% have on real confidence in Trump when dealing with the economy.

  • Trump enjoys similar numbers on other top issues like immigration and foreign affairs. Sixty-percent have confidence in Trump’s handling of the war between Russia and Ukraine (37% a lot and 26% some). Sixty-one percent have confidence in Trump’s handling of immigration (39% a lot and 22% some).

  • On leadership, 35% have a lot of confidence in Trump’s ability to provide real leadership for the country. Twenty-four percent have some confidence in Trump’s ability to provide real leadership for the country and 41% have no real confidence.

The Bottom Line: Voters believed Trump would do a better job than Vice President Kamala Harris on the economy, immigration, and foreign affairs. They have similar high hopes for him delivering on these issues. How he leads and how he fares in his first 100 days will be critical for Trump and Republicans.
