Americans Support Medicaid Working Requirements

May 22, 2025

One of the proposed Republican changes to Medicaid is to require able-bodied adults on Medicaid to work or look for work.  A February KFF Health Tracking poll found that a majority of Americans agree. This is an important data point for Republicans as they push meaningful Medicaid reform.

By The Numbers:

  • Sixty-two Americans agree that adults should be required to work or look for work in order to receive health insurance through Medicaid. Only 38% oppose.

  • When KFF asked the opinion if such a requirement could ensure that Medicaid is reserved for groups like the elderly, people with disabilities, and low-income children, 77% of Americans support the work requirement and only 22% oppose.

The Bottom Line: As Congress pushes to pass the “Big Beautiful Bill,” Republicans should go on offense when it comes to Medicaid. Americans agree with the GOP on requiring able-bodied recipients to work or look for work. Additionally, Americans oppose benefits going to illegal immigrants instead of legal U.S. citizens most in need. It would be wise for Republicans to lean in to these common-sense reforms to save Medicaid and reduce needless government spending. Going on offense now and not letting Democrats distort their actions without GOP pushback will be key for Republicans in the 2026 midterms.
