Independents Driving Trump’s Approval Rating Down

July 31, 2025

President Donald Trump’s job approval rating is near his first-term average low, according to the latest Gallup tracking. While Republicans remain positive on the president, the decline in his approval is being driven by a drop among Independents.

By The Numbers:

  • Trump’s job approval rating is 37%, down ten points since January and close to his record low in his first term (34%).

  • Trump’s job approval rating with Republican is 89% and 2% with Democrats. His approval rating is down to 29% with Independents, a decline of seventeen points with this group and the lowest rating with Independents in either term.

  • Trump’s average 40% approval rating for his second term is well below the average job approval rating of his predecessors’ second terms (59% for all presidents elected between 1952 and 2020).

The Bottom Line: Trump’s approval rating is lowest with Independents on his handling of the federal budget (19%), while his highest approval rating with Independents is on his handling of Iran (36%). Only 30% of Independents approve of the job Trump’s doing on immigration and just 29% approve of the job he’s doing on the economy. While Republicans will continue to stand with Trump and laud the Democrats’ overall poor ratings, it’d be wise for the GOP not to ignore Independent voters going into 2026.
