President Trump’s Opportunity

November 28, 2024

A new CBS News/YouGov poll show President Donald Trump is starting on a positive note as a majority of Americans approve of his transition as well as some of his key policies. More importantly, Americans are optimistic about the country’s future again.

By The Numbers:

  • Fifty-nine percent of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of his presidential transition while just 41% disapprove. Additionally, a majority of Americans are happy (31%) or satisfied (24%) with Trump’s election.

  • Looking at the issues, 44% of Americans believe Trump will bring down the costs of food and groceries while 35% believe costs will go up. Fifty-two percent approve of Trump’s plan for U.S. tariffs on imported goods, while 48% disapprove. Fifty-seven percent of Americans approve of Trump’s plan to deport illegal immigrants, while just 43% disapprove.

  • In October, 57% of Americans said America’s best days were in its past, and only 38% said America’s best days were in its future. Today, those numbers are 27% and 67%, respectively.

The Bottom Line: President Trump will be sworn into office with an opportunity he didn’t have in 2016. Not only did he win a strong victory in the Electoral College, but Americans are optimistic about the country’s future again. If he can deliver quickly on some of his promises, and not get too distracted, these numbers could remain well into his first year.
